The Water Technology Unit in the Center for Advanced Materials (CAM) at Qatar University (QU) organized the first workshop on membrane-based water desalination technologies in cooperation with a group of distinguished experts. The workshop was held under the patronage of Dr Hassan Al-Derham, President of Qatar University and Prof. Mariam Al-Maadeed, Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies.

The theme of this workshop was membrane technologies for seawater desalination. The workshop program included an introduction to the membrane desalination processes, emerging innovations and opportunities for membrane-based desalination and water treatment, membrane performance of reverse osmosis systems and energy efficient desalination using membrane technology.

Director of the Center for Advanced Materials and Founder of the Water Technology Unit, Dr Nasser Abdullah Alnuaimi, said that this workshop comes within the framework of the joint understanding between Qatar University and the Qatar Electricity and Water Company (QEWC). It is in support of a vital industry in Qatar, especially after Qatar recently entered the field of desalination using membranes and RO, which saves energy compared to the thermal technologies currently used in Qatar as the country moves towards energy saving and eco-friendly alternative energy.

The workshop was delivered by world-renowned experts in the field of membrane-based water desalination from local and international universities, headed by Prof. Ahmad Fauzi Ismail, Vice President of University Technology Malaysia; Prof. Amr Henni, Dean of Research - University of Regina, Canada; Prof. Ho Kyong Shon, Director of the Centre for Technology in Water and Wastewater at the University of Technology, Sydney, Australia; and Prof. Dr. Sayed Zaidi, QAFAC Chair Professor at the Center for Advanced Materials at Qatar University. Thirty trainees from various governmental and private bodies outside QU participated in this workshop.

The Center for Advanced Materials and the Water Technology Unit are comprised of distinguished research cadres and advanced scientific instruments in applied scientific research to support various industries in the State of Qatar, especially in the fields of petroleum, natural gas, petrochemicals, aluminum and iron, as well as desalination and treatment for sea and industrial waters.
